										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Ever since Stephen Covey published his bestselling book <b>&#8220;7 Habits of Highly</b> <b>Effective People&#8221;</b> in 1989, the subject of habits has been in vogue. There’s no shortage of information if you’re looking to find useful habits to adopt for yourself. That said, many of the habits out there relate to business or personal success. But if your goal is a healthy family, you might want to take a page out of the expert “habit” books and apply them to your family life.</p>
<p>In 1997, my quest for family health and habits were put into motion when I founded LifeWorks Wellness Center with my wife, Sue Minkoff. From its inception, we always sought out to create a healing center where people would not only get the best possible medical care but in an environment that made you feel like family, while also being passionate advocates for families looking to strengthen all facets of their household.</p>
<p>As such, we have amassed 11 simple but powerful habits of a healthy family over the past 2 decades:</p>
<h4>1. Eat Together</h4>
<p>When families sit down for a meal together, rather than eating in “shifts” or grabbing food on the go, they tend to eat healthier things. Vegetables, fruits, and whole foods are more often consumed, rather than processed and fatty foods.</p>
<p>In addition to the physical benefits that come with healthier meals, research shows that family time helps children get better grades and avoid smoking, alcohol, and drugs.</p>
<p>If your family doesn’t share many meals together now, it might not happen overnight. Perhaps start with a goal of two meals per week. Stick to that, build the frequency over time, and establish it as a habit.</p>
<h4>2. Cook Together</h4>
<p>Similarly, cooking meals together is beneficial for a healthy family. Not only is homemade food generally healthier, but family members who cook together are spending time together and creating memories. The kitchen is often the hub of a home, so it’s a good place to come together.</p>
<p>Making meals together also allows family recipes to be passed down. Children who learn to cook are developing a valuable life skill, and the work involved is shared – Mom or Dad doesn’t need to feel as though meal prep is their burden alone.</p>
<h4>3. Plan Vacations Together</h4>
<p>How often do you go on a vacation with your family and encounter complaining children? Something’s too boring, or you’re too busy. Involving the whole family in vacation planning might help.</p>
<p>Giving children a voice in family plans allows them to communicate and stand up for the things that they want to do, as well as to consider others’ input and even learn to compromise. If you’ve gotten into the habit of the parents being authoritarian in planning activities, you can certainly try to get into the habit of getting everybody involved.</p>
<h4>4. Respect Alone Time</h4>
<p>As great as it is to do things together as a family, it’s also inevitable that all members of a family will want some alone time — and that’s a healthy thing.</p>
<p>Spending time alone allows a person to reflect, unwind, problem-solve and more. Especially in this age of connectedness, when everyone seemingly has a mobile device tethered to them, it’s important to allow each other to disconnect when they feel the need. Healthy families make a habit of respecting each other’s alone time.</p>
<h4>5. Learn to Listen</h4>
<p>Parents are no strangers to talking to their kids. But productive conversation is a two-way street, which means talking with your kids is important — and talking with someone involves more than simply talking.<br />
True conversation involves listening, and healthy families make it a habit to listen to each other rather than just take turns speaking. What you tell your family members is no more important than what they have to say to you. Family members that make a habit of two-way discussions are more understanding of one another, and therefore closer.</p>
<h4>6. Make Health a Routine</h4>
<p>If you want to build healthy habits, health must become a routine that all family members follow. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control highlights consistency, predictability and follow-through when it comes to structuring family routines for health.</p>
<p>That might mean everyone in the house brushes their teeth at the same time after dinner. It might mean that no one eats sugary snacks after a certain time of day. It means scheduling regular checkups, cutting off screen time after a certain hour, and making sure everyone gets enough sleep every single night. For an advanced take, consider alternative health options such as acupuncture for the family.</p>
<p>Make these things a daily routine, and you’ll develop healthy family habits.</p>
<h4>7. Get Physical</h4>
<p>The physical fitness mantra, especially when it comes to the current childhood obesity epidemic, is to “eat less, move more.” Healthier eating habits can be derived from adhering to some of the habit-building already mentioned, but if you want your family to move more, you have to make an effort.</p>
<p>Go on family walks or bike rides. Plan for weekend activities that involve play. When you have a family gathering for a birthday, organize a relay race before cutting the cake. It hasn’t stopped me, that’s for sure — by the time I was 70, I had already competed in 42 Ironman races.</p>
<p>The takeaway is that you can plan activity into your life, and healthy families make a habit of moving. It works in reverse, too — people who engage in regular exercise tend to be more effective in their family roles.</p>
<h4>8. Get in Some Downtime</h4>
<p>Families are busy. There’s homework, kids’ sports schedules, social events to attend. The weekends, especially, can feel like the time when you’re always jetting from one place to another.</p>
<p>If you feel you need a break from all the activity, your family probably does, too. It’s great to honor social obligations and keep the kids busy, but sometimes you just have to chill out. If your weekends are constantly booked, try to make it a habit to set aside just one weekend a month to have no plans.</p>
<p>Give yourself a rest. Give your spouse a rest. Give your kids a rest. Spend a Saturday morning watching cartoons in your pajamas with your children. Take a weekend with no plans, and just see where it takes you.</p>
<p>If planning active days for your family helps cover your physical health, sometimes taking lazy days to relax and do nothing can help your entire family’s mental health.</p>
<h4>9. Learn Together</h4>
<p>How many parents, when their child comes home from school, ask: “What did you learn today?” It’s fairly common.</p>
<p>But what would you do if your child flipped the script and asked you: “What did YOU learn today?” Could you give them an answer?</p>
<p>There is value in being a lifetime learner. People don’t like know-it-alls for a reason. If you, as a parent, can shoulder the same responsibility for learning something new every day, which is the expectation placed on kids, aren’t you and your child both growing?</p>

<p>Relationship counselors will tell you that being open and honest with your partner is imperative to having a positive relationship. It’s the same with families, which are often an extension of an existing relationship.</p>
<p>That’s why it’s critical to be honest with every member of a family. It’s especially important to not hide anything. If you’re a spouse and a parent, you want your partner and your children to be open and honest with you, so should you get into the habit of being open and honest with them.</p>
<p>One of the foundations of a healthy family is trust, and trust can only be established with honesty and openness. Don’t hide from the truth. Don’t think you’re protecting your family by being less-than-open. Honest and open discourse is how societies advance, and making a habit of being consciously honest and open with family members is a fundamental part of establishing a healthy dynamic.</p>

After making dinner be sure to fully wipe down the kitchen with an anti-bacterial sanitizer to minimize spreading those microbes (like E. coli) around the rest of the house. Wipe down doorknobs, desks and entertainment centers once a day, or every few days, as your family comes in contact with some many germs every day.</p>

Placing it on the counter can cause it to come in contact with other germs, and placing it in a travel case causes excess moisture where bacteria can thrive. The American Dental Association suggests replacing your toothbrush every three months, but during those months you can even throw your toothbrush in the dishwasher for a quick clean.</p>

Wipe town phones, tech and toys with a disinfecting product a few times a week to ensure it stays germ free.</p>

Pollen, germs and other things stick to your shoes, so when you walk into your house, these microbes invade your home. Create a new family-wide policy: no shoes in the house. The Visiting Nurses Associations of America, in partnership with the Clorox Company and Families Fighting Flu, Inc. has launched a program to help people ward off the virus. They created a handy refrigerator chart  to get children involved in proper hand washing. It teaches them to keep track of all the daytime activities when hand washing is important: before mealtime, before playing with babies, after playing with friends, after coming home from school, after using the bathroom and after every cough or sneeze.</p>

We shed dead skin cells on the bedding, and across the room, as well on our clothes we through into the dirty laundry hamper. Wash bedding in hot water at least once a week. Turn up the water heater to a dust mite–killing 130 degrees before you wash, and turn it back down afterward. 										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><a class="inline-links topic-link" title="Psychology Today looks at Anxiety" href="https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/basics/anxiety">Anxiety</a> symptoms are common in children and adolescents, with 10-20% of school-aged children experiencing anxiety symptoms. An even larger number of children experience stress that does not qualify as an anxiety disorder. So how can you help to reduce your child&#8217;s anxiety and stress?</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">1) Encourage your child to face his/her fears, not run away from them</h3>



<p>When we are afraid of situations we avoid them. However, avoidance of anxiety-provoking situations maintains the anxiety. Instead, if a child faces his or her fears, the child will learn that the anxiety reduces naturally on its own over time. The body cannot remain anxious for a very long period of time so there is a system in the body that calms the body down. Usually your anxiety will reduce within 20-45 minutes if you stay in the anxiety-provoking situation.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">2) Tell your child that it is okay to be imperfect</h3>



<p>Often we feel that it is necessary for our children to succeed in sports, school, and performance situations. But sometimes we forget that kids need to be kids. School becomes driven by grades, not by enjoyment of learning if an 85 is good, but not good enough.This is not to say that striving is not important.It is important to encourage your child to work hard but equally important to accept and embrace your child&#8217;s mistakes and imperfections. </p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">3) Focus on the positives</h3>



<p>Many times anxious and stressed children can get lost in negative thoughts and self-criticism. They may focus on how the glass is half empty instead of half-full and worry about future events. The more that you are able to focus on your child&#8217;s positive attributes and the good aspects of a situation, the more that it will remind your child to focus on the positives.</p>

<p>Children need time to relax and be kids. Unfortunately, sometimes even fun activities, like sports, can become more about success than they are about fun.  Instead, it is important to ensure that your child engages in play purely for the sake of fun. This may include scheduling time each day for your child to play with toys, play a game, play a sport (without it being competitive), doing yoga, paint, have a tea party, put on a play, or just be silly.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">6) Reward your child&#8217;s brave behaviors</h3>



<p>If your child faces his or her fears, reward this with praise, a hug, or even something tangible like a sticker or a small treat. This is not bribery if you establish this as a motivator prior to your child being in the situation. If you reward behaviors your child will engage in them more often.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">7) Encourage good sleep hygiene</h3>



<p>Set a bed time for your child and stick to that bed time even on weekends.  Also have a 30-45 minute bed time routine that is done every night.  This helps your child to transition from the activities of the day to the relaxed state necessary to fall asleep.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">8) Encourage your child to express his/her anxiety</h3>



<p>If your child says that he or she is worried or scared, don&#8217;t say &#8220;No you&#8217;re not!&#8221; or &#8220;You&#8217;re fine.&#8221;  That doesn&#8217;t help your child.  Instead, it is likely to make your child believe that you do not listen or do not understand him/her.  Instead, validate your child&#8217;s experience by saying things like &#8220;Yes, you seem scared. What are you worried about?&#8221;  Then have a discussion about your child&#8217;s emotions and fears.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">9) Help your child to problem solve</h3>



<p>Once you have validated your child&#8217;s emotions and demonstrated that you understand your child&#8217;s experience and are listening to what your child has to say, help your child to problem solve.  This does not mean solving the problem for your child.  It means helping your child to identify possible solutions. If your child can generate solutions, that is great.  If not, generate some potential solutions for your child and ask your child to pick the solution that he or she thinks would work best.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">10) Stay calm</h3>



<p>Children look to their parents to determine how to react in situations. We&#8217;ve all seen a young child trip and fall and then look to their parent to see how to react. If the parent seems concerned, the child cries. This is because the child is looking to their parent for a signal of how to react to the situation. Children of all ages pick up on their parent&#8217;s emotions and resonate with them. If you are anxious, your child will pick up on that anxiety and experience an increase in his/her own anxiety.  So when you want to reduce your child&#8217;s anxiety, you must manage your own anxiety. This may mean deliberately slowing down your own speech, taking a few deep breaths to relax, and working to ensure that your facial expression conveys that you are calm.</p>

This might mean telling your child to take a few slow, deep breaths (and you taking a few slow breaths with your child so your child can match your pace). Or it might mean asking your child to image him or herself somewhere relaxing, like the beach or relaxing in a backyard hammock. Ask your child to close his/her eyes and imagine the sounds, smells, and sensations associated with the image. For example, close your eyes and picture yourself on a beach. Listen to the sound of the surf as the waves come in and go out.  In and out. Listen to the sound of the seagulls flying off in the distance. Now focus on the feel of the warm sand beneath your fingers and the sun warming your skin.Your child can do these techniques on his or her own during anxiety-provoking times.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">12) Never give up!</h3>



<p>Anxiety and stress can be a chronic struggle and often the source of a child&#8217;s anxiety changes over time so it can feel as though you are always putting out fires. With repetition of the anxiety and stress management techniques, your child will learn how to lower his/her anxiety level and how to cope with anxiety-provoking situations.The key is repetition so keep it up!</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><strong>“Mom, my stomach hurts.”</strong></p>
<p>My daughter tells me this almost every night at the same time. She feels fine all day but when it’s bedtime and I’m turning down the lights, her stomach hurts.</p>
<p>Nighttime is when many kids anxiety intensifies. It’s dark, they’re alone, there are no distractions…</p>
<p>We have worked together to conquer her anxiety and she knows I will remind her that her stomach is actually just fine and it’s just her worry.</p>
<p>My son on the other hand, used to tell me his stomach hurt every morning before school. He had separation anxiety and didn’t want to be away from me.</p>
<p>Of course, instead of telling me that, he just said his stomach hurt.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Why do kids say their stomach hurts?</h3>



<p>Well, it’s because their stomach <em>actually</em> hurts.</p>
<p>The stomach is home to the enteric nervous system and is even often called your second brain. Big nerves and anxiousness create a real sensation in the belly area.</p>
<p>It makes for quite a cycle because as the anxiety creates a stomach ache, a stomach ache causes even more anxiety and it continues on.</p>
<p>One study discovered that more than half, or 51 percent of people surveyed who experienced stomach pains as children ended up with some type of anxiety disorder sometime in their lives.</p>
<p>The most important thing to remember about kids that often complain of stomach aches (assuming you have ruled out any real stomach issues) is that they are not making it up. They are not lying or doing it for attention.
